New MRT lines may extend to Changi Airport

Commuters will be directly connected from the airport to the city via the line, which cuts through Orchard and Shenton Way.

“If feasible, this extension would be operational together with the opening of the new Terminal 5,” said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in a press release on Thursday.

The combined value of private and public homes in Singapore’s north-east is $396 million less today than when they were bought, a new report has found.

The report by SRX Property sought to calculate the “paper losses” faced by home owners across Singapore, given the recent slide in property prices.

Of the 7,619 Housing Board flats in Sengkang with caveats lodged historically, 46.9 per cent or 3,575 owners would suffer losses if they were to sell at today’s estimated market value, SRX Property said. This calculation is based on the price the owners paid for their homes.

The possibility of a surplus of private homes as well as a poor rental market are keeping home seekers from purchasing completed homes, particularly in the city centre, reported the media.

Notably, majority of the unsold units at completed developments in Singapore are located in upmarket districts 9, 10 and 11, showed data last week.

Singapore's property market has entered a standoff between bargain-seeking buyers and developers sticking to their pricing guns, with March's new home sales dropping 83 percent from a year earlier.

"Buyers think they can have their cake and eat it," said Alan Cheong, senior director for Singapore at Savills Research. "They are expecting the other side to lose money on their behalf. That idea doesn't work if you have an economy that's fully functioning," he said, citing the city-state's unemployment rate of only 1.5 percent.
