New MRT lines may extend to Changi Airport

Commuters will be directly connected from the airport to the city via the line, which cuts through Orchard and Shenton Way.

“If feasible, this extension would be operational together with the opening of the new Terminal 5,” said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in a press release on Thursday.

Lower interest may have contributed to 1.3% drop in private home prices for third quarter

Foreigners have been buying fewer homes and possibly depressing prices in the process. Overseas buyers traditionally add to demand for more expensive homes, including those in the central region and city fringes but their share of purchases has been on the decline.

Foreigners picked up about 137 non-landed private homes in the third quarter, or about 4 per cent of overall non-landed sales.

Singapore firms voice concerns over Johor’s levy on foreign vehicles

SINGAPORE — The Malaysian government’s decision to impose a levy on all foreign-registered vehicles entering Johor Baru has alarmed the business community in Singapore, with trade associations here saying they expect the move to increase costs for companies with interests across the border.

“Many of our members have business connections or factories based in Malaysia. We have also launched the Business Expansion Programme to specifically help companies to expand their businesses in Iskandar Malaysia and Riau Islands Indonesia,” said Mr Lam Joon Khoi, secretary-general of Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF). “As such, the introduction of an entrance fee for foreign vehicles will have an adverse impact on a company’s logistics and supply chain,” he stressed.

Singapore risks tarnishing its business-friendly reputation by implementing new labor laws that require companies to prioritize hiring locals over foreigners for middle income jobs, analysts say.

From Friday, large and medium-sized companies looking to hire workers with a monthly salary below S$12,000 ($9,700) must advertise the positions on a government-run online job database that only Singapore citizens and permanent residents can apply through.

Ultra-wealthy prefer residential property as investment

Property remains the favoured asset class among Ultra High Net Worth Individuals (UHNWIs), with almost a quarter of their investment portfolio accounted for by property, according to Knight Frank’s Wealth Report.

In its UHNWI Attitudes survey which was jointly launched with the Bank of Singapore and involved nearly 600 private bankers and wealth advisors, over 40 percent of respondents said their clients increased their allocation to property in 2013 while 47 percent expect it to rise further this year.

HDB to relocate 399 industrial units from Eunos

HDB will be relocating another batch of units in the Eunos Industrial Estate under its Industrial Redevelopment Programme (IRP) to facilitate future redevelopment of the estate.

Under this 14th batch, 399 units will be relocated and affected tenants will be offered replacement units in a new high-rise Industrial Complex in Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 3. The complex is scheduled to be completed in mid-2018.

The units involved in this relocation exercise are located in 26 blocks. The remaining units will be relocated in subsequent IRP batches.

US Data firm set up Asia-Pac HQ in Singapore

Singapore was ranked the third safest place in Asia to site data centres, according to a Data Centre Risk Index report released in June. The ease of doing business here is one reason for Singapore's rank.

The American tech firm IO will sharply increase its investment here as it moves to make Singapore the centre of its operations across the Asia-Pacific - and eventually the world.

Chief executive George Slessman said on Wednesday that it is ready to spend up to S$70 million (US$56 million) more in developing its base here.

That expenditure will come on top of the S$30 million (US$24 million) it has already put into a new data centre that it officially opened in Ang Mo Kio on Wednesday.
