Golden Mile Complex is a residential and commercial development located between Nicoll Highway and Beach Road.
After privately owned iconic buildings such as Pearl Bank were sold in en bloc deals in 2004, there were calls for Golden Mile Complex to be conserved. Golden Mile Complex came in third in a 2008 Straits Times poll in which 1103 readers voted for the landmarks that they wished to preserve. Many architects also expressed the view that the building should be preserved. However, it is difficult to conserve privately owned buildings since the owners can make more profits by selling the building to other private developers who are more likely to demolish than refurbish.
The owners of Golden Mile complex attempted to sell off the building in an en bloc collective sale twice, most recently in 2006. These attempts failed. Potential investors found it too risky to buy, partly because the land’s 99-year lease started in 1969 and a buyer might be required to seek to extend it. It was also difficult to reach a consensus between office and residential owners about profit sharing. In 2009, the owners tried an alternative way by encouraging shop and office owners to sell jointly to a single buyer.
