Overseas property buyers in Myanmar are now able to own apartments on the 6th floor or higher, according to an official draft of the Condominium Law which was published in the country last week.

The law also stipulates that foreign buyers can purchase up to 40 percent of apartments above the sixth floor in condominium buildings.

Speaking to local media, Capital Development General Manager U Soe Thiha Hlaing said that the property market will become more vibrant and would be bolstered by the provision to allow foreign ownership.

MANY people living and working in sleepy Kampong Bugis are looking forward to the area being transformed into a vibrant residential and lifestyle district as part of government makeover plans.

The prospect of more shops, restaurants and other facilities is proving appealing, especially as it could mean improved property values. "I'm delighted to hear such news, simply because I usually like to buy food near my place. So with the opening of these new places, I have more convenient access to food and leisure activities without travelling," said Mr Sean Liang, a resident of condominium Citylights in Lavender, which is nearby.

The local optimism stems from the Draft Master Plan 2013 released last week. It nominated Kampong Bugis, once home to the defunct Kallang Gas Works and a predominantly industrial estate, as a zone ripe for transformation.

THE number of Housing Board flats being sold below valuation has rocketed, as tighter mortgage rules eat into demand.

According to HDB's latest figures, 105 units were sold in October for less than their appraisal. This accounted for 7 per cent of the total resale volume, a marked increase on the average 0.3 per cent for each month of the first half of the year.

This means around four times as many flats were sold below valuation in October alone than over the whole of January to June, when there was an average of five such transactions every month.

The surplus with S'pore up from US$3.5b in 2002 to US$7.3b last year

[SINGAPORE] American firms appear to have grown more aggressive in exporting services after the Great Recession - and Singapore is one of their major targets, the latest official trade figures from the United States show.

At the same time, the steady rise in the export of Singapore services to the US in the past decade has, at least on average, kept pace with, if not exceeded, the flow coming in the opposite direction, according to figures just released by the US Department of Commerce.

Re-exports climbed to a record high last month, signalling better global economic conditions.

SINGAPORE: Re-exports, a barometer for regional trade demand, climbed to a record high last month.

Economists said the higher trade volumes signal better global economic conditions and this means domestic exports are likely to improve going into 2014.

Re-exports refer to foreign goods that are exported from Singapore in the same state as previously imported, without going through further processing.

According to the latest trade data from IE Singapore, re-exports jumped 26.7 per cent in October and has been on the rise for the past six months.

The SFIC said the three-year plan encourages companies to "improve, innovate and integrate".

It includes better integration between the furniture industry and other relevant sectors, and one area is fostering closer partnerships with real estate developers.

HDB spent $1.5 billion on ramping up housing supply

The Housing and Development Board (HDB) chalked up a net deficit of $797 million in the last financial year (FY2012/2013), which saw an 80% increase from $443 million the year before. This was calculated before a $1.04 billion government grant and taxation were factored in in the same financial year.

In its annual report released on 16 Oct 2013, HDB said the higher deficit stemmed from a larger deficit for its Home Ownership segment. The category encompasses the development and sale of flats to eligible buyers under the various home ownership schemes for public housing.

A real estate price correction could lead to more NPAs and this could lead to a self fulfilling cycle of a deep rooted correction in the economy.

Japan, the US, Spain and Ireland are examples of high-profile countries whose economies were destabilised by a real estate bubble burst. How and why does real estate cause economic catastrophe? Can it happen to India as well? The single common factor for real estate bubble burst across economies is the exposure of the banking sector to inflated asset prices. Economic collapse in all these countries has been led by the banking system.

I went to a Think Asia, Think Hong Kong event earlier this week. Towards the end of the session, one of the delegates stood up and asked how Hong Kong compares with Singapore. This is obviously a very relevant question for many SMEs looking to expand into Asia.

As the panel at the event explained, competition between Hong Kong and Singapore is intense, but this is the way they like it. One drives the other on, with each country introducing new initiatives to become even more attractive for inbound investment.

From my experience of having worked with companies expanding into Asia, it is clear that there is no easy ‘one size fits all’ answer to the question. However, some useful factors that all businesses should consider when comparing Hong Kong and Singapore are as follows:

Mainland Chinese companies registered in China will now able to list in Singapore, a move that will allow the Southeast Asian exchange to compete with Hong Kong to attract China’s corporate giants.

Singapore Exchange said on Monday that it would create a framework in cooperation with China Securities Regulatory Commission to allow the new listings. Chinese companies have been allowed to list in Singapore before, but they had to be incorporated outside mainland China.

Change is likely to result in shift to jobs in services sector: JP Morgan exec

THE local economy is entering challenging times as it transits to one led by productivity and it's also a fallacy to think that the economy will benefit as much as previously from stronger growth of the developed markets.

People tend to compare Singapore with global cities but it actually has a developing market structure, only the cost of living is comparable to places such as New York and Hong Kong, said James Sullivan, JP Morgan head of Asean/Singapore equity research.

"All of us who live here know it is very expensive," said Mr Sullivan yesterday in a Singapore equities outlook presentation.

Not only is Singapore among the costliest cities in the world, its ranking continues to move higher.

Here is the press release from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM):

A record proportion of residents aged 25 to 64 were in employment in 2013.

The labour force participation rate rose for a second consecutive year to a new high in 2013, as more women and older residents joined the labour force amid a tight labour market. Real income growth strengthened, as nominal income gains remained high and inflation eased. These are the key findings from the "Singapore Workforce, 2013" report by the Ministry of Manpower's Research and Statistics Department, based on data from the Comprehensive Labour Force Survey conducted in mid-2013.
