With one of the world’s lowest crime rates, Singapore has been ranked by expatriate parents as the safest place to raise children abroad, revealed HSBC’s Expat Explorer Survey 2013.
Now in its sixth year, the study polled over 7,000 expats across nearly 100 countries from around the world to provide insights into expatriate life.
The survey found that close to nine out of ten (86 percent) expat parents in Singapore regard the city-state as the most child-safe destination where they can walk around at any time of the day and still feel protected.
Overall, the country ranked second for raising children abroad, faring well for improvements in children's health and well-being with 71 percent of expat parents rating the category favourably compared with the global average of 56 percent. In fact, 36 percent of expat parents saw an improvement in their children's health since relocating to Singapore compared with 26 percent elsewhere.
At the same time, 36 percent of expat parents in Singapore believe that their children are more outgoing compared with the global average of just 25 percent.
Meanwhile, Singapore placed ninth on the survey’s expat economics league table, which ranks countries in terms of household income, disposable income and satisfaction with the host economy. Switzerland topped that list, followed by China, Qatar, Thailand and the Cayman Islands.
Singapore also placed sixth in terms of expat experience, with Thailand topping the list. The expat experience covers an expat’s lifestyle, particularly the ease of setting up in a new country, how well they integrate into the local community, as well as their overall quality of life.
