Research critical to address Singapore's urban challenges

To meet its urban challenges, Singapore must continue to develop and test solutions, Minister of State for National Development Desmond Lee said at the Centre for Sustainable Asian Cities (CSAC) Research Symposium (pictured) on 18 September.

“A key research area that we must continue to focus on is to ensure a high quality living environment in urbanised and compact Singapore. This involves enhancing connectivity, accessibility and convenience of services and amenities for residents,” he said.

He acknowledged Singapore faces urban growth challenges such as transport congestion, waste accumulation and high energy consumption. “To help us better understand the complex nature of our urban challenges, research is critical. Research creates a foundation of knowledge through which we can discover practical solutions for improving our living environment,” he added.

Mr Lee also said more greenery need to be integrated into the country’s built environment and allow more biodiversity to flourish, and design for a pleasant living environment.

CSAC serves as a platform to develop cutting-edge urban planning and design solutions as well as building technological innovations for high density environments.

The Ministry of National Development (MND) has collaborated with CSAC on eight projects funded under the MND Research Fund. “These projects aim to develop best practices, guidelines and frameworks for the planning and development of sustainable and high-density living in Singapore,” Mr Lee said.
