To serve the needs of a fast-growing population and support new developments in the area, more public hospitals will be built in Singapore's northern region by 2020, Health Minister Gan Kim Yong said.
Speaking at yesterday's ground-breaking ceremony for Sengkang General and Community Hospitals (pictured), Mr Gan noted that his Ministry is looking at a few areas for the next hospital, with Woodlands being a possibility. While the exact location is unconfirmed, demographic needs will be a key consideration.
Meanwhile, the Sengkang complex is part of the Healthcare 2020 Master Plan, which aims to expand healthcare services in the country.
According to Mr Gan, "the integrated hospital development will not only serve the young growing population (of Sengkang), but also the older communities living nearby especially those in Hougang and Ang Mo Kio. We can thus expect the healthcare needs in the north-east region to grow significantly over the next 20 years, and the Sengkang hospitals will play an important role in meeting this growing demand."
Sengkang General and Community Hospitals will launch in phases, beginning with the acute hospital followed by the community hospital.
Mr Gan also said that the development will allow "patients who require long-term but less intensive care" to be transferred seamlessly in between the facilities.
Scheduled for completion in 2018, it could yield another 1,400 hospital beds, in addition to the existing acute hospitals in the area.
